A Guide To Heartworm Medicine and Buying Online
Having been lucky enough to have a sponsor that currently allows us to provide many of the best heartworm medicines without the need for a prescription it seemed timely to give a brief overview of the few things all pet owners should always keep in mind if they wish to give a monthly heartworm treatment for Dogs or Cata.
Firstly if your Dog has not been been treated with a heartworm medication for six months then it is imperative that it is tested to ensure their are no adult heartworms present. Although there is much controversy about the dangers of giving a heartworm treatment to an animal that may have contracted these worms over an extended period there is a very slight risk that if given a monthly treatment they could be in danger. From all reports the risk of them coming to any danger is quite remote but it is better to be safe than sorry for the cost of a test at the vets.
Next I would like to clear up the myth that our pets need heartworm treatments ever single month. Too many pet owners get in to a state of real panic when it comes to the animals in their care. We may have been given a horror story by someone or maybe even been convinced by our vets that missing a monthly dose of a heartworm pill can be dangerous. This is absolutely not the case. When an animal first gets infected with the microscopic form of the juvenile heartworms by an infected mosquito they are absolutely of no risk to the animal for many months.
It is only after they travel to the hearts of our pets that the heartworms can be a severe risk to our pets and even then it is not as hogh as many believe. Missing a single months dose and then resuming it will do absolutely no damage to your pet. The worms will simply not have grown big enough or be in a position to put the health of an otherwise healthy Dog or Cat in any danger.
This is not to say that this process is recommended as it is then all too easy to miss extra months until we find ourselves in the position of needing to get a veterinary test to ensure that no adults have formed.
The best prevention for heartworm problems is to give an inexpensive monthly treatment that ensures the safety of our pets.
Next I would like to look at another myth surrounding heartworm medication and that is that these treatments are actually preventatives. They aren’t. There is not total guaranteed prevention for animals contracting heartworms. They are introduced in to the body by an infected mosquito that has previously bitten an infected animal. Although there are a number of very good cheap pet meds that aid tremendously in cutting down the chances of our pets being bitten by mosquitoes and the like none of them are 100% and none of them are allowed to claim that they can prevent animals contracting heartworms.
Rather, the only real way to stop Dogs and Cats developing adult worms that are the cause of bad health problems is to give a treatment on a regular basis that eliminates them while they are still in the juvenile stages. Thees medications for heartworms are 100% effective and are the only way to avoid extreme treatments to get rid of adults once they are inside the heart of our pets. These treatments are relatively inexpensive and the number of months of the year that the treatments are used is entirely down to the pet owner.
For those in warm climates all year round where the temperatures are high enough for the risk of infection to be ever present then year round treatment is always recommended. For those in climates with cold winters then this is not really necessary although more people are taking a year round treatment option as this then saves a trip to the vets before the seasons treatments begin. The choice is the pet owners and should be based on seasonal temperatures as well as what gives us peace of mind.
We are finding that orders for the treatments have not been effected by the time of year and this is because the low prices, especially the generics, mean that in most cases it is actually cheaper to give a dose every month of the year rather than pay for the test a tthe vets to ensure that no adult worms are present. Use your own judgement as to whether this is needed or not.
