If we are concerned about heartworms in Dogs and Cats (and we should be), we have a few choices of products available to us. It can often be a little overwhelming trying to choose the best heartworm medicine, especially if we are unsure what brands really are the best. Heartworms in Dogs can be a very serious issue so we want to ensure that we get the best possible preventative treatment that there is. There are a number of preventative treatments available as well as treatments for Dogs that already have heartworm symptoms. Heartworm medication can be very successful at curing this terrible problem but it is much better if we can simply take preventative measures to ensure that our Dogs never get heartworms in the first place.
There are a few leading brands such as Heartgard, Interceptor, Sentinel and Revolution but Heartgard by Frontline is probably one of the most well known and respected as it is made by the leader of treatments for fleas and ticks. Frontline for Dogs is the best treatment against ticks and fleas and I would be inclined to go with frontline for their heartworm medicines as well.
Heartgard Plus prevents all forms of worms including roundworms and hookworms. It comes in easily digestible tablet form that you administer monthly. Whichever product you decide to use to protect your Dog from heartworms you should ensure that you always follow the prescribed course. In some areas this will mean giving your Dog heartworm medication all year round while in other areas it will only be necessary for part of the year.
As heartworm for Dogs is caused by the mosquito it really does depend on the presence of mosquitoes in your area. If they are present for a large part of the year then a monthly treatment is always recommended. If mosquitoes are only a problem during the warmest weather then it is recommended that you supply heartworm medicine for Dogs for a month before the season begins and a month after it ends.
Where To Purchase Heartworm Medicine For Dogs
At present a lot of heartworm meds are prescription only. This means you will have to buy from your Vets or online from one of the companies that supplies a prescription as you make your purchase. There are some exceptions though, at least at the time of writing, and surprisingly it is for the more discounted brands like Valuheart which, although without any tasty meat flavor like the more expensive heartworm medicines, has very good reviews. Valuheart is one of the few heartworm medicines that you can purchase without a prescription and is also one of the cheapest.
UPDATE: Having not long written this post it seems things have changed already. Nearly all heartworm medicines are now prescription based, at least in the US. However, some online stores can sell without a prescription because of where they are based or because it is automatically issued. I just found out you can get Valuheart by clicking the link. It is only $20 for a six month supply which is about half the price of Heartgard.
You can now also make great savings on all heartworm meds without a prescription. All banners on this site now take you to a Canadian pet meds store where you can buy everything without a prescription. As well as making life an awful lot easier the prices are also the best on the web. I have just found them but this is fantastic news.

- Heartworm In Dogs
You will definitely pay a little more if you purchase something like heartgard or Heartz but it is only a few dollars extra and it comes in tastier tablet form. Choosing the brand probably depends on how good your Dog is at taking its medicine!
Personally I have a lot of faith in Frontline but that is just my opinion. It seems that the basic ingredients have the same effect whatever product you buy. You can purchase generic Heartgard which has the active ingredient Ivermectin an anti-parasite medication which may work out a little cheaper than the branded products. Personally I would go for something like Heartgard Plus as it does more then just stop heartworms. It also protects against hookworms and roundworms which can be a real danger to Dogs. For a few dollars more it may be better to purchase this as it will protect from both heartworms and the other potentially dangerous parasites that your Dog may get.
Whatever heartworm medicine for Dogs that you decide to purchase just ensure that you get it from a reputable supplier. If you have problems getting your Dog to take tablets then it is advised to crush the tablets and add to a tasty treat. For my Dogs anything that is wrapped in a little cheese is wolfed down immediately but if that fails then a crushed tablet is never noticed when added to their normal food.
