We want to ensure that our Dogs never get heartworms in the first place, and using effective treatments to prevent the problem is the best thing we can do. But what exactly are heartworms and how do Dogs get them in the first place?
How Dogs Get Heartworms
The cycle of heartworms in Dogs is a fairly complicated one but this is how all Dogs can actually get heartworms. The adult heartworms, both male and female, live in the blood vessels and the heart of Dogs. They can be very long, up to six inches, and can produce thousands of minute baby worms. Now, it is not these small worms that will kill the Dog, it is more complicated than that. These worms need to be passed on to other Dogs to actually give a Dog heartworms.

It is the mosquito that performs this role. When a mosquito bites a Dog with heartworm, along with blood it will suck up the miniscule heartworms at the same time. These tiny baby heartworms will live in the mosquito for a month or so. They have now reached a move towards adult worms although they are still fairly young. If the mosquito know bites your Dog it will pass on these growing worms to the Dog. The worms will then grow to adulthood inside the Dog and then as the heartworms reach maturity they will once again produce tiny heartworms that will continue the cycle.
This is why the treatments like heartgard are so important. As well as killing any small heartworms that may have been passed to your Dog in the last month or so it will guard against any future heartworm problems.
Microfilariae is the name for the young heartworms which in reality are at the larval stage when ingested by the mosquito. They will not survive to become adult heartworms unless they pass through the mosquito. Heartworms are a very serious problem and it is well worth giving a monthly heartworm medicine to ensure that your Dog does not become part of this cycle. Once the heartworms have reached adulthood inside a Dog they can live there for years. At this stage treatment is very expensive and can be very dangerous for Dogs.
They will have to be very docile for weeks after the treatment and prevention is a much better and safer alternative. Treat monthly to prevent heartworm for Dogs.
