This is how Cats get heartworms. It is from infected mosquitoes that transmit the tiny larval stages of the heartworm that then develop in to adults over months. The heartworm medication for Cats will totally stop them from being a danger to your Cat and should be used every month of the year.

Cats that for the most part live indoors are much less likely to get heartworms as they will not have as much exposure to mosquitoes.
